APEX EXPO, Long Beach, 19 September 2023 – Airbus has announce that Lufthansa will be the first airline to upgrade to the recently introduced Airspace L Bins.
Beginning in January 2025, Lufthansa plans to retrofit 38 of its A320 aircraft with these innovative bins, offering a remarkable 60% increase in bag capacity compared to the earlier A320 bins.
Charbel Youzkatli, Airbus Head of Commercial Services Europe, states, “We’ve been in close conversation with our airline partners, and it’s evident that larger bins are a crucial component in elevating the passenger experience. Similar to the XL Bins, the L Bins offer more space and the added advantage of a plug-and-play retrofit. We are thrilled to witness Lufthansa being the pioneer in offering these L Bins to its passengers and reaping the operational efficiency benefits they bring to aircraft turnarounds.
The advantages of Airspace L Bins multifaceted. L Bins are designed for a retrofit that can be accomplished in three to five days, making it Airbus’ quickest and most cost-effective A320 retrofit solution. This results in less aircraft downtime for the airline. Additionally, L Bins create room for three additional bags per bin, enhancing the boarding and deplaning experience for both passengers and crew.
These bins, crafted from ultra-lightweight and exceptionally sturdy composite materials, will be produced by EFW (Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH). Just like with all Airbus retrofits, a significant focus is placed on reusing existing components to minimize waste. The L Bins reutilize many parts of the original bins, including the sidewalls, ceiling, and lighting.
New storage dimensions for the L Bins will be capable of accommodating bags with measurements of 61cm (height) x 38cm (width) x 25cm (depth).
